Essentially bahn mi is a sandwich, so we’re attempting to give you a recipe for a sandwich, but you already know how to do that. This is a very specific vietnamese sandwich, but since the whole idea is to use what you have on hand, feel free to change up whatever ingredients you have. We used Like Gyros, which is untraditional…. But it was what was in our fridge 😉
Essential for a bahn mi is pickled veggies, mayo based dressing and protein, this is what we did.
1 pack of Like Gyros
Oil for frying.
2 pieces of baguette, we used the whole grain one we had lying around – toasted
1 handfull of cabbage – chopped
1 carrot – thinly sliced
½ red onion – thinly sliced
2 tbsp sugar
Salt and peber
10 slices of cucumber
1 red chili thinly sliced
2 tbsp mayo
Lime juice of ½ lame
1 tsp chili paste (depending on how spicy you want it).
First make you pickled veggies. Heat the vinegar in a small pot and melt the sugar in it. Add a opinch of salt and peber and pour it over you veggies. Leave it untill you are ready to serve, but it gets better after a few hours in the fridge.
Fry the Like Gyros until golden and perfect 8it’s a skill you’ll learn over time, knowing when Like Gyros is perfect 😉
Now it’s time to assemble your bahn mi, put you chili mayo on both top and bottom bread, add drained pickles, coriander, cucumber, chili and Like Gyros.
